Academic Transfer Program

Welcome

Overview| Curriculum| Requirements|

The Academic Transfer Program is for students who wish to complete up to two years of a bachelor’s degree before transferring to a four-year college or university. We also have students who are taking prerequisite courses prior to enrolling in other SCC programs such as Radiology or Respiratory.

  • Academic Transfer courses are carefully designed to meet transfer specifications, and SCC instructors are qualified professional educators in their subject areas. Therefore, SCC students are consistently well prepared for success in their transfer colleges.

Overview

How do classes transfer?

  • Most colleges and universities will accept 60-66 semester hours in transfer. This is equivalent to 90-99 quarter hours. (One and a half quarter hours equal one semester hour).
  • You may transfer at any time. You do not have to take a minimum number of classes or hours at SCC before transferring. You do not have to earn an associate’s degree before transferring.
  • Most schools require a grade of “C” for the class to transfer. Moreover, most schools require a CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) of at least 2.0 (C average) to transfer. However, many schools or departments require a higher CGPA for admittance. Competitive schools which do not accept all applicants usually give preference to those with higher CGPA’s.
  • You should apply to your transfer college six to nine months before you plan to begin classes there. Include an official transcript from SCC as part of your application. You may arrange for a transcript to be mailed wherever you wish with a written request to Student Services.

What is required for a bachelor’s degree?

  • Most colleges and universities require 125-132 semester hours for a bachelor’s degree. You may complete up to half of those hours at SCC.
  • Degree requirements are usually organized by categories. For example, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UNL requires 6 semester hours in Communications; 3 in Math; 9 in Human Behavior, Culture, and Social Organization; 10 in Science and Technology; 6 in Historical Studies; 3 in Humanities; 3 in Arts; another 6 in Humanities and/or Arts; and 3 in Ethnicity and Gender, for a total of 49 semester hours. These are considered General Education requirements. All of these requirements may be met with classes from SCC. In addition, a student also needs at least 32 semester hours in Psychology and 18 in an approved minor subject. Some of these classes may also be taken at SCC. A student may also take some elective courses at SCC which will transfer and may apply towards the bachelor’s degree.
  • There is not one list of General Education requirements that will fit every major or every school. Different schools and different majors often have different requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to know what classes are required for the major at the school to which the student will transfer.
  • Each school has the right to decide if it will accept classes in transfer and how those transferred classes will apply towards any particular degree. Speak with an advisor in the Department in which you will major at the school to which you will transfer about your classes at SCC.

Can I earn a degree at SCC?

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS: The Associate of Arts degree is for students who plan to complete their first two years of a bachelor's degree in humanities, social sciences or arts.  Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor and receiving college or university to determine a program of transfer courses that will meet the requirement for the student's field of study.

ASSOCIATE OF SCIENCE: The Associate of Science degree is for students who plan to complete their first two years of a bachelor's degree in engineering, science, mathematics, or pre-professional programs.  Students are encouraged to meet with their advisor and receiving college or university to determine a program of transfer courses that will meet the requirement for the student's field of study.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS:  Transfer to UNL College of Business Administration: This specialized degree is an integration of requirements for the Associate of Arts degree from SCC with requirements for a Bachelor's degree from the College of Business Administration at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln.  Students who complete this degree can transfer to the UNL Business College with all of their general education requirements met.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS:  Transfer to UNL College of Education and Human Sciences; Inclusive Early Childhood Major: This specialized degree is an integration of requirements for the Associate of Arts degree from SCC with requirements for the Inclusive Early Childhood degree from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and totals 109 quarter credits.  This major prepares students for careers working in a variety of roles in early childhood classes and services.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS:  Library Technical Assistant (LTA) Focus: This specialized degree allows students to earn their Associate of Arts with a focus as a Library Technical Assistant.  There are eight LTA focus courses administered online through the six community colleges in Nebraska.  Upon completion of the degree a student can transfer credits towards a Bachelor's degree in Library Science at the University of Nebraska - Omaha.  Students not interested in completing a Bachelor's degree will be able to find work in the library field upon completion of the degree.  The Associate of Arts with the LTA focus requires the completion of 102 total credits hours.

What other information do I need to know?

  • Some schools, such as the University of Nebraska, require a student to have taken certain high school classes for admission. If you do not have all the high school admission requirements, you may take those classes with SCC.
  • Many courses at SCC have prerequisites. A prerequisite may be a placement test score (ACT or Compass) or another course. All English and math courses, some science courses, most psychology courses, and most sociology courses have prerequisites. Prerequisites are important and must be done!
  • All students are assigned to an advisor during their first quarter with the Academic Transfer Program. You should see an advisor if you have any questions about registering for classes, prerequisites, transferability of classes, etc. You may also change your assigned advisor if you wish.

Requirements

Admissions:

All new students seeking admission to a program of study at SCC must complete an Application for Admission form. In addition, an applicant must:

  1. Request a copy of his/her high school or GED transcript be sent directly to the Office of Admissions.
  2. Request copies of official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions be sent directly from the institution to the Office of Admissions.
  3. Be assessed for readiness in basic reading, written expressions, and mathematics. Assessment in these three skill areas may be determined by:

    a) ACT scores
    b) Evidence of three semester hours or more of transfer credit from an accredited postsecondary institution with a grade of C or better in the areas of English or math or in a course which indicates reading ability
    c) Compass/Asset placement scores (Compass/Asset basic skills assessment is available through the Testing Center at no charge)

Please contact the Office of Admissions for more detailed information.

Placement:

Placement in classes requiring proficiency in reading, writing, and computational or algebraic skills is determined by the student's college placement exam scores (ACT/Compass/Asset) and/or previous college coursework as verified by an official transcript.

Prerequisites:

Certain courses in the Academic Transfer Program have prerequisites, such as:

  1. All English courses – either a placement score or Composition I (ENGL1010) or Composition & Literature (ENGL1015)
  2. All math courses – either a placement score or a previous math course
  3. Students should be eligible for Composition I (ENGL1010) before registering for Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL1010), Elementary Spanish I (SPAN1010), or any of the three major Speech classes (SPCH1090/1110/2810)
  4. Most psychology courses require Introduction to Psychology (PSYC1810). These courses also require good writing skills.
  5. Most sociology courses require Introduction to Sociology (SOCI1010). These courses also require good writing skills.
  6. Both Chemistry & the Citizen (CHEM1050) and General Chemistry I (CHEM1090) require Intermediate Algebra (MATH1100) or an appropriate math placement test score
  7. Both Astronomy (PHYS1030) and Descriptive Physics (PHYS1150) require Beginning Algebra (MATH0950) or an appropriate math placement test score
  8. General Physics I (PHYS1410) requires Trigonometry (MATH1200) or an appropriate math placement test score
  9. All Spanish classes except Elementary Spanish I (SPAN1010) require the previous course or the Spanish placement test
  10. Students should have some accounting background (a high school course or on-the-job-training) before taking Principles of Accounting I (ACCT1200). The student without this background should register for OFFT1310, Office Accounting. (The failure rate in Principles of Accounting I for students with no previous experience is 85-90%).
  11. History (HIST) and Art History (ARTS) courses which are designated I or II are chronologically sequential. However, course I is not a prerequisite for course II.

General Recommendations:

Each school has the right to decide if it will accept classes in transfer and how those transferred classes will apply towards a particular degree. Therefore, it is very important for a student to work closely with an advisor from the school to which the student plans to transfer in selecting courses from the Academic Transfer Program at SCC. However, here are some general recommendations for the undecided student:

  1. A student who needs any developmental courses (as indicated by placement test scores) should take them as soon as possible. Reading is the most important, with English as a close second.
  2. Nearly every major at every school will require Composition I (ENGL1010).
  3. Every major will require some kind of math. Math is also a prerequisite for several science courses. It is usually advantageous to the student to take math sooner rather than later. It is also a good idea for a student to plan on taking all math courses required for his/her major at one school. However, different schools and different majors have different math requirements for a bachelor degree. Once a student has completed or scored higher than Intermediate Algebra (MATH1100), s/he should consult with an advisor from his/her transfer school to determine which college-level math course is required for the planned major.
  4. Most majors require at least one history class; American History (HIST2010/2020) and Western Tradition (HIST1000/1010) are the best choices.
  5. Most majors require at least one science with lab.
  6. Introduction to Psychology (PSYC1810), Introduction to Sociology (SOCI1010), World Regional Geography (GEOG1420), Human Geography (GEOG1400), American Government (POLS1000), Macroeconomics (ECON2100), and Microeconomics (ECON2120) are good choices to meet Social Science requirements for most majors.
  7. Introduction to Philosophy (PHIL1010), Applied Ethics (PHIL1060), Introduction to Music (MUSC1010), and most literature courses (any ENGL course with a number higher than 1020) are good choices to meet Humanities requirements for most majors.
  8. ACFS1010, Academic and Career Orientation, is an excellent class for the undecided student. The credit won’t transfer, but it can be applied towards our associate degrees. More importantly, the class will help students start the process of setting goals and making intelligent decisions about their educational futures.
