The Computer Programming Technology program at the Milford Campus has developed a unique focus. We provide a multi-platform computing environment. Students gain experience with IBM’s mainframe, iSeries, PC and server based applications.
With a large number of current business applications residing on the mainframe, industry needs individuals who understand the existing system environments as well as new technology. With the presence of the internet, businesses can now provide web access to information on the mainframe or iseries that was otherwise inaccessible to the consumer. Computer Programming Technology will give you hands-on experience in server application programming.
A strong multiple platform background provides the student with a broader selection of career choices.
Computer Programming Technology is a 6 quarter or 18 month program.
Classes meet everyday on an 8 to 4 schedule allowing students intense training on the latest equipment and software applications. All programming language classes meet for one hour of lecture followed by at least one hour of lab. Students use the lab time to apply concepts and techniques in a real time programming environment. The lab provides access to all offered platforms; PC, the System i and System z (Mainframe).
The Visual Basic and Java languages are used to incorporate the fundamental programming logic into programming languages that are popular on the PC platform and that can be graphical in nature. Database Management and DB2 Database Applications & SQL will prepare students for DB2 file access in future COBOL and RPG programming classes.
Once the students have developed their fundamental programming logic skills on the PC platform, they are introduced to the Mainframe and iSeries programming environments. Students will learn advanced programming logic skills using the COBOL language and Customer Information Control System (CICS) will also be taught as a means of developing online, user-interactive applications for the Mainframe platform. Students will also be introduced to the iSeries and the RPG programming language.
5th quarter students are grouped into Computer Programming Project teams and will work together to develop a computer system that emulates a real world business application. Each member of the Computer Programming Project team will write several programs for the business application using a culmination of skills. The communication and time-management skills learned during the Project team experience will assist the student in understanding the team environment commonly used in industry. At completion, the team of students will formally present their business application to Computer Programming staff, students, and perspective employers.
Students will also have the opportunity to see how data created and stored on the Mainframe and iSeries platforms can be accessed via internet application. During the Java Server Programming course, advanced concepts will be covered, building upon the students’ existing knowledge of Visual Basic, Access, Excel, Java, HTML, and JavaScript. The advanced concepts will illustrate how applications on the PC platform can manipulate data stored on the Mainframe and iSeries platforms, which is a common business practice.
Program Mission Statement:
The Computer Programming Technology program provides current technical training for students who intend to attain employment in business information systems. The technical training curriculum centers on structured programming techniques, hands-on experience using various programming languages and operating systems, and a team-based project to design and implement a small-scale computerized business system.
Program goals:
