The fire service and related industries provide education about, prevention of, and suppression of fire for their communities.
These industries are also involved with providing emergency medical care, specialized and technical rescue, response to terrorist attacks, and mitigation of hazardous materials releases in their jurisdictions. Additionally, they provide investigative services to determine cause of fires and to determine costs to restore property after a fire has occurred. These industries need professionals who are trained to meet higher entry level qualifications. Those in the industry need opportunities to increase their professional knowledge to prepare to accept greater responsibility and to meet the expectation of the public that those in their service are striving to be the most knowledgeable in order to face the constantly changing face of the fire protection industry.
The Fire Protection Technology Program is 6 to 8 quarter (18 to 24 month) program. The student is on campus participating in lecture/lab courses throughout the program.
All tuition, fees, books, firefighting gloves, hood, safety glasses, and uniform are the responsibility of the student. Firefighting Protective Clothing and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus are provided for use by the student while in the program.
The Fire Protection Technology Program at Southeast Community College is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Students in the program have the opportunity to take State certification tests for Firefighter I, Fire Instructor I, Hazardous Materials Awareness Level, and Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations Level in cooperation with the Training Division Nebraska State Fire Marshal. Students will be eligible to test for National Registry Emergency Medical Technician Basic while in the program. In cooperation with the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau students may also pursue Certification at the Firefighter II and Fire Officer I level. After April 2005 they will also be able to pursue Fire Officer II Certification through Iowa. Additionally students will have the opportunity to receive National Fire Academy Field Delivery Classes as part of some of the course curriculums.
Upon successful completion of the program the student will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree
