The Ford Automotive Student Service Educational Training Program (ASSET)is a two-year automotive program designed to provide Ford Motor Company dealers with highly qualified and motivated entry-level technicians. The curriculum is designed by Ford Motor Company and Southeast Community College-Milford Campus and leads to an associate degree. The program involves attending classroom lecture and laboratory experiences on Ford products at the Milford Campus and a unique opportunity for students to work at a Ford Motor Company dealership.

The total program is completed in seven quarters or approximately 21 months. Four quarters are spent in college and the remaining three quarters in Ford sponsoring dealerships. Each specialized subject is studied in the classroom and laboratory on campus and then followed by related work experience in the dealership. For example, the first quarter involves 10 weeks at the college followed by 16 weeks of work experience in the dealership. After the dealership work experience is completed, the student returns to the college for another 10 weeks of courses, followed by 14 more weeks at the dealership. This rotation system continues until completion of the program. The work experience at the dealership should relate as much as possible to the course work just completed in college.

Since considerable time is spent at the dealership, the program requires the student to have a sponsoring Ford Motor Company dealer. If necessary, the student can request assistance in locating a sponsoring dealer. The main responsibility of the dealership is to provide training-related employment for the student during the work experience periods.

Overview

The Ford Automotive Student Service Educational Training program is a strategic alliance between the student, Ford Motor Company, Ford Motor Company dealers, and Southeast Community College. The ASSET program was created to develop much needed qualified dealership technicians. This program incorporates the most advanced automotive technical training with a strong academic foundation of math, reading, electronics, analytical and technical skills.

The ASSET program teaches exclusively on Ford Motor Company products, and current products, giving the students a unique edge at the dealership. This program allows the student to get on-the-job training at a sponsoring Ford Motor Company dealership. During the odd numbered quarters (1-3-5-7) the students are in the classroom gaining knowledge and some lab work. During the even numbered quarters (2-4-6) the student is at the dealership gaining experience and the wage the dealer will pay him.

This program is NATEF certified by Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) that is a nationally recognized organized that certifies technicians and automotive programs.

Mission

Division Mission Statement:
The mission of the Transportation Occupation Division of Southeast Community College is to prepare individuals for careers in a variety of transportation service fields.

Program Mission Statement:
The mission of the ASSET program is to prepare individuals for employment as high quality entry-level technicians with Ford Motor Company dealers

Program Goals:
The program goals will be reviewed annually.

• Provide Ford Motor Company technical training in the areas of automotive engines, automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, suspension and wheel alignment, heating and air-conditioning, electrical/electronics, engine performance, and brakes.
• Provide an effective training program that meets the employment needs of the automotive industry as directed by the ASSET advisory committee.
• Provide students with safe working habits so as not to injure themselves, others, or personal property.
• Instill in the student a sense of punctuality and time management.
  

Student Learning Goals:
The student learning goals will be reviewed annually.

• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of engine repair.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of brakes.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of suspension and steering.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of electrical and electronics.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of engine performance.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of automatic transmission.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of heating and air conditioning.
• The student will demonstrate their knowledge of manual transmission.
  

Requirements

Read all materials carefully and retain this sheet for reference.

• Although it is not necessary for you to have a potential dealer sponsor at this point, please contact the college regarding sponsorship. If any dealers are interested in sponsoring you, please indicate so on your application.
• Complete the Candidate Application (blue form) and return it to SCC-Milford Campus. The students accepted for this class will be chosen on a first come, first served basis.
• All applicants are responsible for scheduling an appointment to take the COMPASS test. The pre-tests will be in the areas of writing, reading, and math. ACT scores may be accepted. Please call the SCC-Milford Campus Assessment Office, 402-761-8202 or 1-800-933-7223, Ext. 8202 for an appointment.
• Applicants with satisfactory test scores will be contacted to proceed with their interview with a Ford Motor Company dealership. Those applicants who did not achieve satisfactory scores, will be notified as soon as possible regarding their status and recommendations for correcting deficiencies.
• The student will be notified by mail if his/her application has been accepted or rejected for the Ford ASSET Program. Those selected will also receive additional information from SCC-Milford Campus regarding registration and orientation.

Student Responsibilities

• Obtain Ford dealer sponsor.
• Provide sponsoring employer (Ford dealer) with responsible and productive employment.
• Participate in all learning activities at scheduled times.
• Attain a minimum grade of 2.0 in each prerequisite program course to continue.
• Maintain attendance standards.
• Be responsible for program cost: tuition, fees, books, tools, housing, etc.Wear work uniforms and safety glasses during campus and dealership training.
  

Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance is required in all classes. Each instructor will inform students by means of a written syllabus of attendance requirements at the first class meeting.

Tools
Students enrolling in the Automotive Service Education Program are required to provide hand tools for use in the lab while on coop and for use after graduation. While this can appear to be expensive, it is also an investment in your future since the tools will be used for many years. During the first week of the first quarter the students will be offered opportunities to purchase these tool sets from various manufacturers at considerable discount. The students who already have tools will only need to purchase the tools necessary to complete the set of required tools.

Cooperative Education

All programs having cooperative education method of instruction are required to have the following (but not limited to) in their coop program:

• A cover letter to all participating employers explaining the cooperative education experience. A college-wide brochure, identifying the mission and goals of the coop experience should be included. Syllabi will be completed for each pre-coop, coop, and post coop course and shared with the participant and employer.
• Training sites identified/approved by the Southeast Community College ASSET Coop Education Coordinator (Training Center Approval Form).
• Student Job tasks will relate directly to the program of study.
• Students will initiate the process for securing and scheduling an approved coop education employer.
• Full-time Ford Motor Company ASSET students must document a minimum of 480 hours (based on students working 40 hours per week) of work experience during there coop quarter. Programs may choose to have more contact hours.
• All coop education students will have two visits per coop quarter. Coop education sites that are over 500 miles from the SCC campus must have dean approval.
