In 1988, the Kansas City Branch of John Deere invited Southeast Community College located in Milford Nebraska to form a partnership that would serve to strengthen the agricultural machinery industry by training entry-level technicians for John Deere's dealership network. The first class of John Deere Tech students began their program of study in July of 1989. This partnership was the first of its kind and has become a model for other John Deere Tech Programs across the United States and in Canada.
Why did John Deere take this initiative?
They noted a large shortage of qualified dealership technicians. A survey indicated a lack of dealership technicians which numbered more than 600. The result: the formation of the John Deere Tech Program. This program is a cooperative effort between John Deere Company, the John Deere Dealership Network, and Southeast Community College.
We invite you to learn more about what this program has to offer.
Please contact us if you have any additional questions.
The John Deere Tech Program is a seven quarter (21 month) program. The student is on campus participating in lecture/lab courses during five of those seven quarters. The other two quarters involve a unique opportunity for students to demonstrate the knowledge they have learned on campus at their sponsoring John Deere dealership. During these Cooperative Education experiences the student is paid; helping offset the costs of college.
All tuition, fees, books, required tools, and related costs are the responsibility of the student. See estimated cost list.
The John Deere Tech Program at Southeast Community College is fully accredited by the State of Nebraska and by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Upon successful completion of the program the student will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree.
Program Mission Statement:
The mission of the John Deere Tech program is to prepare individuals for employment as high quality entry-level technicians with John Deere Agricultural Equipment dealers.
The John Deere Tech Program goals:
Students at Southeast Community College are employed by area businesses and industries and have the opportunity to "learn while doing" through the College's Cooperative Education Experience.
Students will work in positions related to their career goals. Student objectives are established through mutual agreement by the student, the employer, and the cooperative education experience coordinator.
Progress is evaluated at designated time(s) during the period of employment.
How Cooperative Education Works
Southeast Community College's Cooperative Education Experience is designed for students who have completed specific courses in their program of study and have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0.
Coordinators work closely with employers and students to determine the optimum Cooperative Education arrangement.
The student registers for the Cooperative Education Experience and earns college credit while being paid a salary for the cooperative experience; the salary is set by the employer and agreed upon by the student.
