The Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Technology Program at Southeast Community College is the only post-secondary program of its kind in Nebraska. The campus is located at 8800 “O” Street on the east edge of Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Technology Program, is a Diploma Program, and is twelve months long with classes beginning in January and July.

Students begin by learning the basics of each of the Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft systems and proceed to learning advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting procedures. The hands-on approach assures students understand the complex principles and theories incorporated in today’s vehicles.

The Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Technology Program prepares the technician for working in this exciting and challenging field which includes working with independent repair shops, dealerships, and specialty shops.

Overview

The Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Program has received many donations from manufacturers, local service and repair shops as well as individuals. These donations include motorcycles, ATV’s, personal watercrafts, complete engines, individual components, reference and service manuals, videos and training aids. We have also received assistance from owners, service managers and technicians. These donations allow Southeast Community College to provide the students with the experience of working on the latest technology along with understanding the basics used on older vehicles.

The Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft program has been a member of the SkillsUSA Club (VICA) since 1990. This club is a state and national organization which allows students a chance to develop their professionalism and to compete with other post-secondary schools from across the nation. In competition, students from this program have placed 1st – 1991, 2nd - 1998 and , 3rd – 1990, & 1996.

Instructors attend local and factory update schools and seminars in order to stay current with industry and to be prepared to present this information to the students.


Mission

Program Mission Statement:

The mission of the Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Technology Program is to prepare individuals for employment as high quality entry level technicians in the motorcycle, ATV, & Power Product repair field.

The Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Technology Program Goals:

  1. Provide quality technical training in the areas of engines, transmissions, suspension, suspension and brakes, electrical/electronics and engine performance as directed by the Motorcycle, ATV and Personal Watercraft Technology Advisory Committee.
  2. Provide the student with training to enable them to service vehicles at a rate of speed comparative to established labor time guides.
  3. Provide a safe working environment with current equipment which is conducive to an effective learning atmosphere.
  4. Conduct classes in a manner to help the student develop a sense of punctuality and time management.


Requirements

Basic Skills Test
Each student enrolling in a program at Southeast Community College is required to take a COMPASS assessment test prior to acceptance into the program. This test is used to determine if the students skill level in basic reading, written expressions, and mathematics are consistent with the program requirements. Students may be required to complete developmental course work before advancing to certain program courses. Specific information about developmental course work is available through campus admissions and career advising staff.

Tools
Students enrolling in the Motorcycle, ATV & Personal Watercraft Program are required to provide hand tools for use in the lab and for use after graduation. While this can appear to be expensive, it is an investment in your future since the tools will be used for many years. During the first week of each quarter the students will be offered opportunities to purchase these tool sets from various manufacturers at considerable discount. If you already have the tools, it is not necessary for you make additional purchases. Contact program for required tool list.


Student Responsibilities

  • Attend each class and lab session in a regular and punctual manner.
  • Maintain academic standards and adhere to academic policies.
  • Maintain a minimum grade of 1.0 in each program course, with a minimum GPA of 2.0.
  • Maintain all school requirements to attain an Diploma degree.
  • Be responsible for program costs: tuition, fees, and books.
  • Provide a basic tool set and lockable storage.

Attendance
Regular, punctual attendance is required in all classes. Each instructor will inform students by means of a written syllabus of attendance requirements at the first class meeting.

Cooperative Education

Students at Southeast Community College are employed by area businesses and industries and have the opportunity to "learn while doing" through the College's Cooperative Education Experience.

Students will work in positions related to their career goals. Student objectives are established through mutual agreement by the student, the employer, and the cooperative education experience coordinator.
Progress is evaluated at designated time(s) during the period of employment.


How Cooperative Education Works:

Southeast Community College's Cooperative Education Experience is designed for students who have completed specific courses in their program of study and have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0.

Coordinators work closely with employers and students to determine the optimum Cooperative Education arrangement.

The student registers for the Cooperative Education Experience and earns college credit while being paid a salary for the cooperative experience; the salary is set by the employer and agreed upon by the student.

The Student:

  • Adheres to the policies of the employer, just as any other employee.
  • Competently performs assigned work and completes agreed-upon objectives.
  • Completes all necessary records for Cooperative Education Experience files.

The Employer:

  • Employs the student at a fair salary during the Cooperative Education Experience period.
  • Provides training and supervision for the student.
  • Helps the student achieve his/her learning objectives .
  • Evaluates the students performance at designated time(s).
  • Notifies SCC if there are any changes made or needed in the Cooperative Education training agreement.
