Visual Publications

Welcome

Students graduating from the Visual Publications program are uniquely skilled and prepared for the changing world of digital print and visual marketing. Students are prepared to work in the publishing, multimedia, and web creation fields. Graduates will acquire skills in both Macintosh and PC platforms achieving knowledge and hands-on skills in digital branding, offset printing and web design.

There are four areas offered in Visual Publications:

The Visual Publications Associate of Applied Science Degree prepares graduates for work in all entry-level positions for companies both large and small, private and government agencies. Students display work that both illustrates and demonstrates their skills in the digital printing industry. Most of these products are created for actual companies thus giving the graduate real-life experience of this visual industry.

The Visual Publications Diploma prepares graduates for work in entry-level positions for the printing industries. Students gain knowledge of the production sequences of the printing industry and have hands on experiences in publishing software.

The Digital Publishing Certificate offers graduates generalized training for the administrative and office professional interested in advancing skills in the digital publishing software.

The Offset Printing Certificate prepares graduates for work in entry-level positions for the printing industries. Students gain knowledge in the production sequences and have hands-on experiences in computer, camera, film assembly, offset duplicators, platemaking, and binding/finishing processes.

Overview

The Visual Publications field is changing rapidly opening up new opportunities in the digital communication job markets. Graduates are trained to meet these opportunities in a variety of possible positions in Digital Publications including computer illustration and layout, prepress and desktop publishing, web creation and digital multimedia.

The program is available only at the Lincoln campus. Students may focus in digital image creation, pre-press and/or web creation for the print and marketing areas.

Students must earn a course grade of “C” in all prerequisite courses to gain admittance.

All tuition, fees, books, required tools, and related costs are the responsibility of the student.

The Visual Publications Program at Southeast Community College is fully accredited by the State of Nebraska and by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science Degree (or other depending upon the area of study).

 


Mission

Program Mission Statement:

The mission of the Visual Publications Program is to prepare students for work in the visual publications field by instructing them on the use of the software and hardware used in the publishing, multimedia, and web creation fields.

The Visual Publications Program Goals:

  1. To provide the student a safe learning environment emphasizing good safety and work practices.
  2. To provide the student with hands-on experience utilizing up-to-date software and equipment.
  3. To provide the student with a strong foundation of the visual publications field.
  4. To provide the student with a working knowledge of project workflow.
  5. To provide the acquisition of professional skills and abilities in digital manipulation for print, pre-press and web creation.


Requirements

  • Complete an application for admission form and return it to SCC-Lincoln Campus. The students accepted for this program will be chosen on a first come first served basis. We allow new students into the program in the summer and winter quarters. Students on a waitlist will be able to take classes if room is available. Student Responsibilities

  • Must complete specific courses in their program of study and have achieved a grade point average of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0.
  • Adhere to the policies of the employer during internship, just as any other employee.
  • Competently perform assigned work and complete agreed-upon objectives
  • Complete all necessary records in the Visual Publications Internship Log Book.
  • Turn in a record of hours and a copy of product created during the internship.

Twice a year Visual Publications students have an opportunity to present their portfolios and websites before a panel of employers to receive feedback on their work.
