SCC Hires Coaches for Baseball, Softball Programs
Southeast Community College has hired Beatrice residents to fill head coaching positions of two programs that will play their inaugural seasons this fall.
Ron Cullison will coach men's baseball, while Pat Lytle has been hired to coach women's softball.
Cullison is a long-time Beatrice resident and coach who has more than 25 years of coaching experience at a variety of levels, from high school, college and semi-professional. His experience as a pitching coach also will be crucial as Southeast starts a new program.
Lytle, also a Beatrice resident, has more than 30 years of coaching experience, from the YRI level to coaching high school teams for Beatrice and Wymore Southern high schools. His experience as a pitching coach also will benefit the start-up program.
"The college is very excited to start two new sports at the Beatrice campus," said Dr. Dennis Headrick, vice president for instruction and Beatrice campus director. "We believe it will be a benefit to the community and region that locally talented young people can experience the opportunity to play at the collegiate level. These two coaches will do a great job in getting the new sports up and going and being very competitive."
Southeast, a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association's Region IX, will play a fall 2008 schedule in both baseball and softball. Dan Johnson, SCC's director of athletics, said fall play will involve scrimmages, while the championship seasons will take place in the spring.
"In baseball, the NJCAA allows 76 games or scrimmages, with a maximum of 56 in the spring," he said. "In softball, it allows 40 playing dates, with a maximum of 30 in the spring."
Southeast is a member of the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference.
