SCC Golf Team Captures Own Invitational, Conference Championship
Top-five finishes by Matt Vineer, Luke Benford and Adam Dredge lifted Southeast Community College's men's golf team to a first-place finish at its own Storm Spring Shootout April 20-21 at Beatrice Country Club.
The victory, SCC's fifth in five tournament outings this spring, also gave the team the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference championship.
SCC's home tournament represented the third leg of three 36-hole tournaments that comprise the conference championship. Previous two-day tourneys were held at McCook and Columbus.
Vineer, a freshman from Hampshire, England, posted a two-day total of 147 at Beatrice Country Club to take first. Benford, a fellow freshman from Hampshire, England, was third with a 151. Dredge, a freshman from Valentine, was fourth with a two-day score of 156. SCC posted a team score of 612, easily outdistancing second-place Central's 638. McCook did not play.
To determine the conference champion, the best two tournaments are used to score each player. After scores were tabulated, SCC placed four golfers in the top five. Benford won the individual title with a 299, while Vineer and Dredge tied for second, each posting 303. Brandon Schock, a sophomore from Beatrice, rounded out SCC's scoring with a fifth-place finish at 319.
SCC coach Bill Campbell said the team must maintain its edge heading into the 54-hole Region IX championships at Scottsbluff Country Club April 26-28.
"I'm confident, but I'm not underestimating our opponents," Campbell said. "Central's getting better every time out."
Southeast will compete against Central and a pair of Montana schools, Dawson and Miles community colleges. The team taking first place advances to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Tournament at Goose Pond Golf Course in Scottsboro, Ala., May 19-22.
