SCC's Milford Campus to be Final Stop of Tour Nebraska 2009

Between 200 and 300 cars are expected to stop at Southeast Community College's Milford Campus in June as part of Tour Nebraska 2009, a 600-mile driving tour through eastern Nebraska.

Sponsored by the Nebraska Rod and Custom Association, Tour Nebraska 2009 will stop in Milford on Sunday, June 7. SCC, the Milford Chamber of Commerce and Milford Kiwanis are planning special activities once the cars arrive, which will be approximately 3:30 p.m.

During the two-hour stay, visitors will not only get to see the cars as they arrive at SCC's Milford Campus parking lot, but they'll also get to see a Virtual Paint Booth demonstration in SCC's Auto Collision Repair Technology area, watch an engine build competition in SCC's Automotive Technology area, and attend the dedication of the ACR addition. The addition, located on the north end of the Eicher Technical Center, is approximately 8,000 square feet and includes six new paint booths and a newly remodeled shop space.

Kevin Uhler, SCC Automotive Technology instructor, has personally been involved in the Tour since 1996.

"I was contacted by NRCA about the opportunity to have drivers visit our campus," Uhler said. "This is a huge honor and a great opportunity to show off our school."

The second day of the event, June 7, begins in Lincoln and travels east on Nebraska Highway 2 to Shenandoah, Iowa, south to Tarkio, Mo., then back west to Auburn, south through Dawson, then back to Beatrice before ending in Milford.

Labeled "600 Miles of Fun," Tour Nebraska 2009 kicks off Friday night, June 5, at the Lancaster Events Center in Lincoln. The drive on Saturday, June 6, begins and ends in Lincoln. Drivers will head north out of Lincoln on U.S. Highway 77 and go as far north as Winnebago before heading west to Stanton then south to Seward before ending in Lincoln.

The tentative schedule for June 7 in Milford:

3:30-4 p.m. - NRCA cars begin to arrive on SCC campus.

3:30 p.m. - Virtual Paint Booth demonstration, SCC's Auto Collision Repair Technology area, Eicher Technical Center.

3:30-6 p.m. - Participants enjoy free drinks and snacks provided by Milford Chamber of Commerce. The general public may purchase refreshments from the Chamber.

4 p.m. - Engine Building Competition in SCC Automotive Technology area, Eicher Technical Center.

4:30 p.m. - Dedication of ACR addition by SCC and its Board of Governors, ACR addition.

5-6 p.m. - Virtual Paint Booth demonstration and viewing of SCC special interest/race cars, Automotive shop area.

This year's Tour Nebraska also will mark the 10,000th mile driven and will be observed as the participants enter Milford. Participants in this year's Tour will be driving vehicles 1979 and older.

The NRCA was formed in 1988 to provide a forum from which special interest vehicle owners could provide a clear and strong voice on legislative issues which affect the hobby. The NRCA acts as a catalyst for these interests, not as a club. There are more than 1,400 active members in Nebraska and surrounding states.

Craig Paro, representing the NRCA's Scholarship Committee, said the organization also has awarded three $1,000 scholarships to second-year automotive students or 2009 high school graduating seniors who will enroll in any of Nebraska's technical or community colleges in an automotive curriculum. This year's recipients are Michael Norris of Lincoln (SCC's General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program), Mary Paulson of Omaha (Metropolitan Community College), and Justin Fries of Oxford (Central Community College).
