SCC Baseball Team Ends Season in Montana
Southeast Community College's baseball team didn't play like a first-year program, even up to the final out.
The Storm, in its first season of competition in Division II of the National Junior College Athletic Association, forced a second championship game at the Region IX tournament in Glendive, Mont., on May 10, against Miles (Mont.) Community College.
But SCC lost the championship game 6-4 to end its season with a 24-12 record. Southeast had defeated Miles in the double-elimination tourney 7-2 to force a second championship game.
"We had them on the ropes," Storm head coach Ron Cullison said. "We just ran out of pitching."
SCC led 4-1 in the championship game but couldn't hold the lead.
Southeast lost the tourney opener 10-2 to Miles before topping Dawson (Mont.) Community College 9-5. Miles eliminated Dawson 7-4, setting up the championship games with SCC.
"All in all, it was a heckuva good year," Cullison said. "My goal at the start was to win 25 games, and we almost did that. We had a lot of rainouts, otherwise I think we would have won 30 games."
Southeast returns all but two sophomores for next year's team.
"The guys coming back can't wait to get next season started," Cullison said. "This is a great group of kids."
Miles, 36-10, advances to the Northwest District Tournament in Madison, Wis., May 15-16. The winner of the district tourney qualifies for the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, Okla., May 23-30.
