New Theatre Classes Offered at SCC's Beatrice Campus
Southeast Community College is offering two new theatre classes at its Beatrice Campus.
Theatre Production begins July 16, while Theatre Practicum begins Oct. 5, the first day of the Fall Quarter.
SCC's Theatre Production class is open to aspiring actors/actresses as well as students who are technically inclined. Enrollment will affect what show is selected, so students are encouraged to register now.
The class will meet from 4-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning July 16. Work by the class will culminate in a show presented at the Beatrice Community Players Theatre Sept. 18-20.
Actors/actresses can receive 4.5 quarter credits for the class, while technical students can take the class for 4.5 or 1.5 quarter credit hours.
Persons wishing more information about the Theatre Production class are asked to contact Jamie Ulmer at: julmer@southeast.edu or at: director@beatricecommunityplayers.com.
SCC's Theatre Practicum class begins Oct. 5. Students looking for a technical experience or who desire to learn more about theatre productions should consider enrolling in this course. This hands-on learning experience will occur in selected areas of theatre production.
Under a cooperative educational agreement between SCC and the CP, students are able to earn credit for practical theatre production. Experiences include, but are not limited to, design, construction and promotion. Students wishing to learn about other aspects of theatre production, such as lighting or sound, also are encouraged to bring those ideas.
Students will work in conjunction with seasoned community actors and staff for a combination of 15, 30 or 45 hours per quarter. E-mail your questions or ideas to Ulmer, instructor/coordinator, at: julmer@southeast.edu or at: director@beatricecommunityplayers.com. Denise Elmer, humanities/speech instructor at SCC, also may be contacted at: delmer@southeast.edu
While Community Players is primarily a volunteer-driven organization, it does employ a small staff of professionals who oversee numerous activities.
Ulmer has been the organization's artistic director since 1997. He has directed more than 50 productions, including "Fiddler on the Roof," "Dial 'M' for Murder," "Grease," "Rumors," "I Do! I Do!" "Harvey," "The Diary of Anne Frank," and "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change."
As an actor, Ulmer has appeared throughout the Midwest in numerous productions, including "Moon Over Buffalo," "Of Thee I Sing," "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "The Foreigner," and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
He also has written and performed a one-man show based on the life of Cole Porter called "Where is the Life that Late I Led?"
Ulmer is past-president of the Nebraska Association of Community Theatres and just finished serving on the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, where he was on the executive committee. He directs and designs all of CP's productions in addition to overseeing daily operations of the organization.
