SCC Ranked in Five Categories by Community College Week
Led by its sixth consecutive No. 1 ranking in Precision Production, Southeast Community College is among Community College Week's annual top 100 Associate Degree Producers in five total categories.
This year's report was released June 15.
Southeast showed a 3 percent growth in the number of graduates in Precision Production to maintain the top ranking in the category dating back to 2004. With 65 total graduates in the category, SCC is first by 22 students.
Precision Production includes programs such as machine tool technology, manufacturing engineering technology and welding technology.
Other categories and SCC rankings in 2009:
Engineering-Related Technologies, 10th.
Science Technologies/Technicians, 34th.
All Disciplines - Non-Minority, 34th.
Associate Degrees - All Disciplines, 67th.
In Engineering-Related Technologies, SCC improved eight spots from its 2008 ranking.
In Science Technologies/Technicians, SCC improved six spots from its 2008 ranking.
In All Disciplines - Non-Minority, SCC moved up eight spots from its 2008 ranking.
And in Associate Degrees - All Disciplines, the College moved up 22 spots from its 2008 ranking.
SCC has 54 Programs of Study, most of which are technical in nature.
Community College Week is published biweekly in Fairfax, Va., and claims to be "the independent voice covering community, technical and junior colleges since 1988." Throughout the history of the rankings, the publication has changed the names of categories that SCC regularly found itself.
Dr. Jack Huck, SCC president, said it's nice to be ranked among the top 100 Associate Degree producers among the nation's some 1,200 schools. However, he said producing numbers isn't SCC's mission.
"We want to graduate students from our programs," Huck said. "There's no question about that. But we emphasize hands-on learning, high-level skills, and placement into jobs once students graduate. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the numbers game. SCC backs up the numbers with value and a quality education."
Huck said the College's 93-plus percent placement rate in 2008, the most recent data available, is indicative of the job members of the faculty and staff are doing to make a difference in students' lives.
"More than nine out of 10 of all SCC graduates in 2008 either found employment or continued their education," Huck said. "That's a very good statistic and one that bodes well for the College."
