As part of its community service component, four teams of Southeast Community College Upward Bound summer program completed projects.
Team Tree Huggers, led by Stacy Oblinger, took part in two of its own projects.
The first project completed was an alphabet coloring book about recycling. These books were written and illustrated by team members. They were then printed by SCC and distributed to the preschool class at Kiddie Campus daycare. The group then received eight donated trees from Walmart and planted them in Hannibal Park in Beatrice.
Along with creating a book and planting the trees, the team also completed community service hours by picking up litter in Beatrice and helping at Kiddie Campus daycare two days a week. The team also created two audio/video projects to compete in a nationwide TRIO contest.
Oblinger was proud of her team's hard work, dedication and accomplishments and said that giving back to the community was a rewarding experience for the students.
Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a Bachelor's degree. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.
