SCC Athletes, Teams Earn National Academic Honors
The 2008-2009 Southeast Community College men's basketball team tied for the highest cumulative grade-point average of all men's basketball teams in the nation, according to information released by the National Junior College Athletic Association.Two other SCC teams and six student-athletes also earned national academic honors.

The Storm men's basketball team had a cumulative GPA of 3.23, tying it for first among all of NJCAA men's basketball teams, regardless of division. SCC competes in Division II in all six of its intercollegiate sports programs.
Joel Wooton is the head coach of the Storm men's basketball team.

The women's softball team, coached by Pat Lytle, finished third in the nation with a 3.57 cumulative GPA.

The women's basketball team, coached by Vicki Wooton, tied for the ninth-highest GPA in the nation at 3.36. The women's volleyball team, coached by Carrie Puhalla, qualified for the honor with a 3.26 GPA, but the nomination occurred after the submission deadline.
Individually, two Storm softball players from Fairbury earned Distinguished Academic All-American status, Brittany Talbot with a 3.96 GPA and Sara Joe with a 3.94 GPA.
Stacy Janssen of Columbus Lakeview (3.75 volleyball), Matt Kampschnieder of Howells (3.70 basketball), Ashley Strickland of Stamford (Southern Valley High School) (3.69 basketball), and Heather Harris of Ogallala (3.61 volleyball) round out the SCC individual honorees.
Distinguished Academic All-Americans hold a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher. Academic All-Americans hold GPAs between 3.60 And 3.79.
"I'd like to congratulate the coaches and student-athletes who have had a fantastic year in the classroom," said Dan Johnson, SCC's athletic director.
