Beginning Beekeeping Class to Start in October at SCC

The United States needs more beekeepers.

That's the word from Troy Fore, executive director of the American Beekeeping Federation. Southeast Community College's Continuing Education Division is doing its part by delivering a practical, hands-on class that will help would-be beekeepers learn this fascinating hobby and/or vocation.

"Beekeeping for Beginners" will meet the third Tuesday of each month for one year beginning Oct. 20, 2009, and ending Sept. 21, 2010. The class will meet from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at SCC's Continuing Education Center, 301 S. 68th St. Place, Lincoln. The cost is $150 per person, and the class is being taught by retired Nebraska bee inspector Charlie Simonds and Hershel Staats.

Enrollment is open now through Oct. 20. For more information or to enroll, contact Nancy Holman at (402) 437-2712, 800-828-0072 ext. 2712, or via e-mail at: nholman@southeast.edu

The number of hobby beekeepers in the U.S. has declined significantly since the 1970s, and classes such as "Beekeeping for Beginners" are important methods to try to increase that number.

Success in beekeeping requires an intimate knowledge of the honey bee and management practices based on colony habits and bee behavior. Persons interested in beekeeping as a hobby or as an added income should attend this class.

During the lab classes, students will have the opportunity to establish and manage their own hive of bees through one production cycle. During the first night of class, supply costs and equipment will be discussed.
