Grant Enables SCC to Offer Advanced ESL Classes to Cargill Employees
Thanks to a near-$7,000 grant from the Nebraska Worker Training Program, Southeast Community College is able to offer an Advanced English as a Second Language class to eight employees at the Cargill plant in Nebraska City.
The 10-week course, scheduled to begin Aug. 3, is part of the Cargill Language Leadership Academy.
"This will be a new customized training that is only being offered in partnership with Cargill Nebraska City," said Rebecca Hayne, Cargill's director of media relations.
Cargill selected the employees based on their potential to become supervisors and expand to a management role within the company. The advanced ESL training will enhance English speaking, writing and reading skills for the purpose of communicating in the company facility and in the community of Nebraska City.
Prior to training, the eight employees will be assessed to determine their English skill level. The training will take place in Nebraska City.
Carol Gustafson, SCC's assistant director of continuing education in the area of professional growth and customized training for business and industry, wrote the grant with the help of Lidia Borer, training supervisor at Cargill. She said participants will receive 40 hours of instruction during the 10-week period. Maria Schinstock will be the instructor for the project.
"I'm excited about working on this project with Cargill," Gustafson said. "Our ultimate goal is to help people who have the potential to become supervisors, not only in their work place but also in their community."
During the 10 weeks, participants will be introduced to various entities within Nebraska City, including the city's history, government and services, to education, social services, economic development and recreation. Guest speakers will be invited to talk about the community, as well as supervisors employed at Cargill. They will speak on what it takes to be a supervisor in their position. Students will write reports on these topics and become comfortable speaking in front of a group. At the end of training, the Test of Adult Basic Education Reading post-test will be administered to assess skills they have acquired.
Cargill, headquartered in Minneapolis, Minn., is an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services. Founded in 1865, the privately held company employs 160,000 people in 67 countries.
"I love this partnership with Cargill," Gustafson said. "I hope we can do further training in leadership and supervision skills for everyone employed at Cargill."
