SCC's English Department Donates Lecture Tapes to Beatrice Public Library
Southeast Community College's English Department recently strengthened its partnership with the Beatrice Public Library by donating a series of lecture tapes.
Danny DeLong, Humanities instructor on SCC's Beatrice Campus, said the Humanities Department collected several sets of lecture courses sold by The Teaching Company that were on VHS tapes. SCC replaced the VHS tapes with DVDs.
"We were looking for a way to share the VHS tapes, which led us to the Beatrice Public Library," DeLong said. "This demonstrates again that SCC works as a partner to develop stronger community resource institutions in our service area."
Laureen Reidesel, director of the library, examined the donated tapes and decided to add them to the library's collection.
"The Beatrice Public Library is very pleased to have the gift of 'The Great Courses' videotapes," Reidesel said. "This has tripled the number of topics that we can offer from this source. In addition to expert presentations on European art, World War II, music and C.S. Lewis, the library can now offer lectures on classical and American literature, 20th century history, speech, the history of the American language and Shakespeare."
The gift has enhanced the cooperation that already existed between the library and SCC, Reidesel said.
"In the past, the library and the College have cosponsored programs," she said. "The most recent cooperative effort was the Promena art exhibit and complementary programs held in October 2008."
Future plans include a special "Day of the Dead" exhibit at the library in October, a student art exhibit in April 2010, and a program featuring the contributors to the College writing publication "Illuminations" scheduled for May 2010.
The lecture tapes were produced professionally, giving library patrons access to lecture courses covering topics such as Greek literature and philosophy, American fiction, Shakespeare, and intellectual traditions in Western Civilization.
