SCC to Hold Homestead Heritage Preservation Program at National Monument

Preserving the past for future generations is just one of the goals of Southeast Community College's upcoming Homestead Heritage Preservation Program.

The program is comprised of four classes running from Sept. 15 through Oct. 1, convening each Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Homestead National Monument of America Education Center, 8523 W. State Highway 4, Beatrice.

SCC's Continuing Education Division is sponsoring the program.

Many homesteaders created works of art as part of their daily lives. But they did not intend for these items to be on display, but rather as functional items in the home that also gave beauty.

Following is a look at each of the classes.

From Wool to Thread - How do you take wool and make it thread? Learn the skill of spinning in this class. Students also will learn how to card wool and thread it onto the spinning wheel, resulting in thread. Spinning wheels will be provided. This craft was used by the homesteaders to create their clothing. Cost is $40.

Nature's Colors - Where do the colors for our clothing come from? Native Americans and homesteaders found sources of color from nature. Students will learn what items in nature will provide color and how to take that item and turn it into a paint or dye. They then will use these dyes to color wool. Cost is $40.

Designs by Thread - Students will create beautiful art with thread in this class. Homesteading women taught each other the skill of lace making. Works of art brightened up those early primitive homes, making life more bearable. Students will create their own piece of art in this class. Cost is $40.

China Painting-Art Preservation - China painting is a skill taught from generation to generation during the homesteading era. During this class, students will learn to make beautiful works of art by painting on raw china and having it fired to make the art permanent. Cost is $40.
