Openings Still Available in SCC Motorcycle Safety Courses

news story image
A course intended for beginning riders and designed to teach safe motorcycle operation is nearing the end of its 2009 schedule, but there still are openings for the three-day course.

Rhonda Taft, director of transportation for Southeast Community College's Continuing Education Division, said there still were openings in some of SCC's Friday-Sunday safety classes going on now through Oct. 16-18.

"The only weekend remaining this year when there's no class is Labor Day weekend," Taft said.

Taft said the one-weekend format has been popular with those taking the course. Friday evenings are spent introducing students to motorcycling and preparing them to ride. Saturdays are more in-depth, covering such topics as motorcycle familiarization, using the friction zone, starting and stopping, shifting and stopping, adjusting speed and turning, controls skills, cornering, matching gears to speed, stopping quickly, and street strategies. Sundays topics are limited-space maneuvers, pressing to initiate lean, cornering judgment, negotiating curves, stopping quickly in a curve, obstacles and lane changes, and avoiding hazards.

Cost is $160 per person. There is a limit of 12 students per class. All classes will meet in Room S-4 on SCC's Lincoln Campus, 8800 O St. The required book is available at SCC's Lincoln Campus Bookstore. Following is a list of remaining classes for 2009.
