The weather on Aug. 5 was on the cool side, but those brave Southeast Community College souls who volunteered to sit on the hot seat at the dunk tank did it for a worthy cause.
The SCC Lincoln Campus Student Senate raised $376 for FoodNet, which has served the greater Lincoln area since 1985.
Cathy Leverett, Student Senate vice president, said approximately 14 SCC staff members were dunked throughout the day.
"We had a great time," Leverett said, "and it's for such a good cause."
Participants purchased three balls for $2 or nine balls for $5.
FoodNet consists of a group of volunteers from several churches and other non-profit organizations who try to stop the waste of food and provide for those in need. Leverett said the FoodNet location she volunteers on Sundays distributes food to an average of 150 clients. FoodNet provides mostly perishable foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy products and bread.
The money donated by SCC's Student Senate will be used to purchase supplies such as Styrofoam dinner containers, zip-lock bags, and fuel for the drivers who pick up the food.
According to FoodNet's Web site, "Anyone who is in need of food is welcome to pick up from any site. There are no qualifications, no forms, no income guidelines, and no limits on how many times you visit the sites."
Each quarter, the Student Senate selects a charitable fundraiser. During the Fall Quarter, which begins Oct. 5, the Lincoln Campus Student Senate will have an Angel Tree during the holiday season.
