Californian David Broida to Conduct Harmonica Workshops For SCC

Dave Broida, a private Blues instructor and musician who has taught Beginning Blues Harmonica at California community colleges and the parks and recreation department since 2000, is teaching two harmonica classes for Southeast Community College's Continuing Education Division in October.

Broida, who has performed professionally for more than 20 years throughout northern California, will teach Healthy Harmonica from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, and Beginning Blues Harmonica from 7:45-9:30 p.m. on the same day. The classes will be taught in the auditorium on the main floor of SCC's Continuing Education Center, 301 S. 68th St. Place, Lincoln. Healthy Harmonica is $35 by itself, while Beginning Blues Harmonica is $40 by itself. Students can register for both classes for $65.

To enroll, go to http://www.southeast.edu, click on WebAdvisor, Continuing Education, then Register and Pay for Continuing Education Classes. Enter the word Harmonica in the key word search box. Anyone wishing more information should contact Nancy Holman at (402) 437-2712 or nholman@southeast.edu.

Breathing is a musician's foundation when playing the harmonica. In Healthy Harmonica, students will take simple pop, folk and blues melodies and rhythms and invigorate them with easy, but powerful, breathing techniques to make any song deeply expressive. No previous ability to play or read music is required. Students will need a "c" major diatonic harmonica, or they may purchase one from Broida for $12.50 cash.

In Beginning Blues Harmonica, students will focus on having fun as they learn all the tricks and techniques to making the harmonica cry, laugh, moan, and wail. Again, no previous harmonica experience is required. Students will need a "c" major diatonic harmonica, or they may purchase one from Broida for $12.50 cash.

Broida holds a bachelor's degree from Sonoma State University and currently teaches Beginning Blues Harmonica workshops at 35 colleges and five recreational centers in the San Francisco Bay area. He presents approximately 80 workshops annually.
