With Cold Weather Looming, SCC Offering Energy Savings Workshops

It's not a question of if it will turn cold in southeast Nebraska. The real question is when.

Southeast Community College's Continuing Education Division is offering two energy savings workshops on SCC's Beatrice Campus that will provide consumers with tips on cutting their energy bill.

Both workshops will take place Oct. 8 in Room 334 of the Kennedy Center on the SCC Beatrice Campus, 4771 W. Scott Road. Cost for each is just $24.

The first workshop, set from 1-4 p.m., is titled "Our Energy Future - The Challenge & Opportunities for Businesses & Organizations." This session is designed for persons who own or operate a business, large or small, or organization to help them understand energy challenges and turn those challenges into opportunities.

From global to local perspectives, the workshop will focus on solutions to these challenges and what resources are available. There will be opportunity for discussion as presenters identify solutions specific to the participants' businesses and organizations.

Daniel J. Lawse, a nationally certified home energy rater, will present an unbiased look at how to prioritize energy saving improvements with an emphasis on low-cost, easy-to-do improvements. In addition, other more expensive upgrades will be discussed. Lawse will provide tools to help make decisions on where to start and how to complete many of the simple energy-saving projects.

The second workshop, set from 6-9 p.m., is titled "Green Homes - Saving Energy & Money in Your Home." This session, also taught by Lawse, is designed for the homeowner who should ask the question, "Is my home efficient?" The average home wastes 20-40 percent of its energy through inefficiencies. This how-to workshop will focus on low-cost, do-it-yourself energy saving projects.
