Casey Glassburner, a December 2005 graduate of Southeast Community College, is the 2009 Lincoln Campus Honored Graduate.news story image

Glassburner was honored in a brief ceremony Sunday during SCC's All-College Open House.

Glassburner graduated from the same Surgical Technology program in which she now teaches. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Doane College and plans to begin working on a master's degree in 2010.

"I was surprised to be given this award," said Glassburner, 25. Program Chair Kathy Uribe nominated Glassburner for the honor.

"I was always one to think that I was getting out of my education what I put into it," she said. "I made sure that I utilized all resources available to me, from my instructors to the preceptors at the clinical sites. I wanted to seek out every learning opportunity."

First runner-up was Lacey Dokken, a graduate of SCC's Medical Laboratory Technology program. Second runner-up was Tracy Svoboda, a graduate of SCC's Office Professional program.

According to Uribe, Glassburner was an outstanding student at SCC, graduating with honors and a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average. She served as president of the local Surgical Technology student organization, which she now advises, and was elected to a national office for the Student Organization of the Association of Surgical Technologists.

She displayed exemplary leadership skills that included helping her classmates raise enough money to attend the week-long national conference in Orlando, Fla. Her clinical skills were above and beyond program expectation, according to Uribe, and she was well-liked by her classmates, instructors and personnel at the various clinical practicum sites. Nominated by SCC faculty, she was chosen to be inducted into the lifetime National Honor Society for Surgical Technology students.

Prior to her employment at SCC, Glassburner worked as a surgical technology assistant, then as a Certified Surgical Technologist, at Lincoln Surgical Hospital.

Uribe said Glassburner is a dedicated instructor in SCC's Surgical Technology program. She is secretary of the Nebraska State Assembly for Surgical Technology and is active on the Legislation Committee, working diligently to get mandatory certification for surgical technologists passed in Nebraska. She also serves on the board of Government and Public Affairs of AST.

"She is very task oriented and will accomplish tasks without being told," Uribe said. "She is very thorough in her work, in addition to her speed of completion. She keeps us all on task and offers fresh, new ideas to help with student learning. We find that now we go to her for help, especially with Angel (SCC's online learning software), instead of her asking for our help. We are constantly amazed by her speed and efficiency."

Glassburner said she strives to become the best instructor possible.

"I'm always trying to improve the way I teach," she said. "There are new advances and more efficient ways for technologists to do things. That works very well, especially with surgery, because that is always changing."

Uribe said Glassburner "is an asset to our program."

"She is an excellent role model for the students and sets high standards for herself and the students," Uribe said. "Her information retention is remarkable, and she is frequently valuable to faculty and students for help."

Glassburner's teaching philosophy is simple.

"Basically, you get out of your education what you put into it," she said. "I'm going to be prepared, but I also expect my students to be prepared. They're going into a hospital. We teach them employability skills."

Glassburner said she always felt confident in her training while she was a student at SCC.

"Instructors in the program always worked together," she said. "It was a cohesive unit. They were very approachable at all times. I knew this was one of the best surgical technology programs in the country. I felt prepared when I went out into the profession."
