Governor Proclaims Nov. 5 as Tim Mittan Day
He thought he was attending just another reception hosted by the incubator tenants in Southeast Community College's Entrepreneurship Center.
What Tim Mittan didn't know was that he was the star of the show.
Mittan, director of SCC's Entrepreneurship Center in Lincoln, was honored Thursday with a proclamation, signed by Gov. Dave Heineman and Secretary of State John A. Gale, proclaiming Nov. 5, 2009, as Tim Mittan Day.
"Wow. Oh, my gosh. Thank you all very much," said Mittan, nearly rendered speechless by the proclamation.
Steve Maly of Maly Marketing, one of the incubator tenants, came up with the idea to honor Mittan. Maly is a native of Fremont, as is Heineman. He said he got to know the governor and first lady, as well as their son, Sam, years ago growing up in the community. Sally was his elementary school principal and he coached Sam for four years in basketball. Steve’s brother Mark, who was in Sam's wedding recently, contacted Sam on behalf of Steve, and Sam in turn e-mailed his father requesting the proclamation.
The proclamation reads:
"Whereas, Tim Mittan, a true entrepreneur, has served the entrepreneurs of Lincoln since the opening of the SCC Entrepreneurship Center in 2006; and
"Whereas, Tim is recognized as an outstanding educator and promoter of the entrepreneurial spirit by this great state, several other states throughout the nation, and internationally; and
"Whereas, Tim has been a passionate role model in his development and support of the entrepreneur community, always striving to do anything in his means to help them reach their potential; and
"Whereas, Tim can always be depended upon to reach not only goals he has set for himself and the Entrepreneurship Center, but also the goals of his tenants and other start-ups in the community; and
"Whereas, Tim has helped develop the Entrepreneurship Center into one of the nation's leading and most innovative hubs for emerging entrepreneurs and has given them the support that they need to succeed; and
"Whereas, All of us having the good fortune of being associated with such a passionate individual, congratulate him on all of his hard earned achievements and recognition.
"Now, Therefore, I, Dave Heineman, Governor of the State of Nebraska, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM the 5th day of November, 2009, as TIM MITTAN DAY in Nebraska, and I do hereby urge all citizens to take due note of the observance.
"IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand, and cause the Great Seal of the State of Nebraska to be affixed this Second day of November, in the year of our Lord Two Thousand Nine."
Prior to reading the proclamation, Maly gave highlights of SCC's Entrepreneurship Center, in which Mittan began researching in 2003.
"This has been a lot of hard work," Mittan told the crowd of about 50 people. "But this job has been the most fun I've ever had. I have a great staff, and I thank you very much."
Mittan, who grew up in Hebron, has been an active member of the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship since the organization started. He has presented at all of the organization's annual conferences, including the 2009 conference in Chicago in which SCC's Entrepreneurship Center was one of only two to receive the NACCE Innovation Award.
