Driver Training (noncredit)

SCC offers driver training classes in the classroom and/or behind the wheel. Classes can be designed specifically to fit the need of a company, organization or individual. Examples include:

  • Defensive Driving: This 4-hour course brings back to the forefront the skills and choices needed to drive without accidents. Topics include the basic parameters of defensive driving, driver choices and possible consequences, conditions and responsible driver choices and general safety considerations. The class can be taught at an employer location or SCC.
  • 15 passenger van safety: CD-ROM driver improvement course specifically for drivers of 15-passenger vans. SCC offers this extremely flexible and efficient training tool in the traditional classroom environment or for the single learner without the need for an instructor. The course will address critical, safe-driving techniques necessary to reduce and mange the rollover potential associated with 15-passenger vans. This class is scheduled as requested. 
  • Driver Education Instructor Training: DMV approved course for the certification of instructors to teach driver education in a noncredit format. Focus is on fundamental driver education, curriculum development, and presentation skills. The intent of this class is for those individuals that want to teach outside the K-12 system. Class size is limited to 6 students. Required book is available at the SCC Lincoln bookstore.
  • Package delivery driver training: The intent of this 40 hour course is to train drivers for package delivery operations. Course content includes the correct interaction between driver and vehicle, correct control of the vehicle between driver and the traffic environment, and recognition of the advanced skills necessary to successfully avoid hazards in the traffic environment.
  • CDL (Commercial Drivers License) Exam Review: This 6-hour class will prepare individuals for written Class “A” tests given by the DMV. Topics include General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, the DMV testing format and DMV licensing requirements.
  • CDL Vehicle Inspection: This 6-hour class will prepare individuals for the knowledge requirement in vehicle inspection of the Class A test given by the DMV. Topics include Vehicle Systems and Inspection Technique. 
  • CDL 3rd Party Examiner Training: In partnership with the Examining Division of the DMV, SCC offers a 32-hour course designed to train approved individuals in the administration of the skill(s) portion of the CDL battery of tests. Instruction includes:  how to correctly administer and score each of the CDL skills tests, understanding performance criteria and the specific driver behaviors evaluated, and knowledge of testing sites and route requirements.  
  • Winter Driving Skills: Get winter motoring tips before the next storm of the season. Join this 3-hour class and become reacquainted with the established guidelines needed to survive winter on the high plains. Topics include driving with reduced traction, limited visibility, vehicle dynamics, skid control, sliding, emergency precautions and tips for a winter survival kit.
