Learn how to save a life!

The EMT-Basic course teaches initial evaluation, treatment and transport of patients with medical problems and/or trauma.

Students learn to recognize and provide initial care for ailments such as:
  • shock
  • heart problems
  • breathing problems
  • strokes
  • burns
  • diabetes
  • drowning
  • accidents.
EMT-Basics are the foundation of pre-hospital emergency medical care. For medical emergencies, they provide rapid response, initial evaluation and care, and transport to an appropriate medical facility. They also provide transport between facilities for people who are bedridden and/or require continuous monitoring and care.

What job options will I have as a certified EMT Basic?

Once you have completed the course and successfully passed the National Registry practical and written examinations, you may submit an application to become certified in the State of Nebraska. Once you receive your certification, you can then work as an EMT working in a variety of settings (in Nebraska most EMTB ‘s work for Volunteer Fire Departments):
  • Paid Fire Department
  • Volunteer Fire Department
  • Private Ambulance Service
  • Industrial Settings
  • Hospitals
EMT-Basic Course Description
 
The EMT-Basic I and EMT-Basic II courses are required courses for any person seeking to become a Nebraska state certified Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B). The courses are based on the National Standard curriculum. These courses have been developed for individuals who desire to perform emergency medical care. Each course is 75 hours in length and 5 credit hours. Students must successfully complete EMT-Basic I to progress to EMT-Basic II. EMT-Basic II includes an additional 10 hours of required clinical time.

The material covered in these courses is divided into seven modules. They are:
  • Preparatory
  • Airway Management
  • Patient Assessment
  • Medical Emergencies
  • Trauma Emergencies
  • Infants and Children Operations
  • State of Nebraska Optional Modules of Pulse Oximetry and Glucometer
To enroll you must Have a current Healthcare Providers or Professional Rescuer CPR course, based on either the American Red Cross or American Heart Association curriculum and an immunization form.

Criminal Background Checks

Southeast Community College requires criminal background checks performed on students taking courses that include experience in patient care settings. Upon enrolling in the EMT B course, you will be required to complete an “Authorization and Disclosure Form” and “Abuse Registry Form.” A nonrefundable fee of $45 for the criminal background check has been added to the cost of the course.

You should also check with national registry and state of Nebraska if you have any misdemeanors or felonies on your criminal record. Some types of convictions will eliminate you from being allowed to be nationally registered or state certified If you have questions regarding background checks, please call 402-437-2706.
