Safety and Security information from the Student Services Division

Reporting criminal actions or other campus emergencies:

SCC students, visitors and employees should report suspected criminal activity or other emergencies at any SCC location to local law enforcement by dialing 911.

SCC staff work directly with local law enforcement agencies to monitor SCC locations and activities in all three communities.

At each SCC location, physical plant maintenance staff combine measures to increase safety and security with all maintenance work done on College buildings and grounds. At the Beatrice location, security officers provide assistance and support to employees, students and visitors.

Maintenance and security staff routinely inspect all facilities and respond to reports of safety and security hazards and concerns. While they do not have the authority to make arrests, security staff maintain a close working relationship with local law enforcement to ensure proper and effective handling of suspected criminal activity or emergencies at all SCC locations.

Firearms/Weapons Strictly Prohibited

Policy A-21: The possession, concealment or use of firearms, weapons, fireworks and explosive materials, or other dangerous instruments is prohibited in college-owned buildings, grounds, or vehicles, or at any location where a meeting, activity or athletics event is conducted, sponsored or sanctioned by the College.

Effective Jan. 1, 2007, Nebraska State Statute 28-1202 makes it unlawful to carry a concealed handgun into a meeting of the governing body of a political subdivision, or collegiate athletic event; school, school grounds, school-owned vehicle, or school-sponsored activity or athletic event.

These prohibitions apply to EVERYONE (employees, students, invitees, and visitors) and are enforceable EVERYWHERE (all College property and all College-related events.) *

Violations of these prohibitions will result in disciplinary and/or law enforcement action.

*Law enforcement officers on official business are exempt.

Drug and Alcohol Policy

Southeast Community College policy absolutely prohibits the unlawful possession, use or distribution of illicit drugs, controlled substances, and/or alcohol by students, employees and visitors on College property or at any College-related activity. SCC employees and students shall observe all state and federal laws and city ordinances governing the possession and use of alcoholic beverages, illicit drugs and controlled substances.

Staff, students or visitors suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol while on campus or at a College-related activity may be requested to leave or may be reported to law enforcement officials. SCC employees or students may also be asked to submit to drug/alcohol testing.

SCC adheres to provisions of the Drug-Free Workplace Act and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act, and the enforcement of underage drinking laws. When warranted, the parents/guardians of students under age 21 may be notified of drug/alcohol violations occurring on campus or at College-related activities.

Sex Offender Registry:

The Nebraska Sex Offender Registration Act requires convicted sex offenders to register with local law enforcement officials. Registry information regarding convicted offenders is published in local newspapers and also is available to the public at http://www.nsp.state.ne.us/sor/find.cfm on the Nebraska State Patrol’s Web site.

  1. Institutions, including colleges and universities, are required to monitor the presence of convicted sex offenders at their facilities. SCC officials will routinely receive information regarding sex offenders residing in counties where our campuses are located.
  2. Upon their enrollment for classes each term at any College facility, all sex offenders listed on the public registry are hereby required to contact and register with the Dean of Student Services at that facility. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action.

Should you have an interest in accessing registry information while on campus, computers are available in the Learning Resource Center at each SCC facility.  To report any persons, activities, or behaviors you deem to be suspicious or questionable, please contact the Dean of Student Services at your campus location.

NOTICE: You are advised to immediately contact law enforcement by dialing 911 to report crimes, or if you feel a reasonable threat to your safety and security.

Video Monitoring:

SCC continues to install and enhance video monitoring at various locations within the College.

Other Services:

Each SCC location provides students with ongoing practical safety and security information. Orientation programs focus on prevention of sexual assault, theft and other potential risks associated with college life. Information on drug and/or alcohol abuse also is provided as part of the orientation process. For more information, contact the Dean of Student Services Office at your location.
