Overview
Welcome to SCC’s Major Appliance Professional Technology program, the only credit program of its kind in the multi-state region. The nine-month program provides a 50-50 balance of theory and hands-on application in keeping with the philosophy of the College. This includes a solid foundation of the principles of major home appliances, including ranges, refrigerators, washers, dishwashers, and dryers, combined with extensive hands-on instruction. Major appliance technicians service, maintain, troubleshoot and repair major home appliances. Students in the lab will learn in-home service customer relations, appliance installation, systematic troubleshooting and repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical major appliance components.
Mission
The mission of the Major Appliance Professional Technology program is to prepare students to become employed as technicians, supervisors and service representatives in the residential appliance field.
Job Outlook
The demand for qualified technicians is substantial nationwide, and continued growth is predicted. The Professional Service Association estimates there are approximately 30,000 Major Appliance Professional Technician jobs available, but fewer than 500 graduates from appliance programs each year. The industry offers variety, terrific salary, potential and opportunity. A major manufacturer has dedicated significant resources to address what it describes as a “critical” shortage of major appliance professionals. The manufacturer estimates jobs for major appliance professionals and major appliance representatives will grow 50 percent during the next several years. Recent graduates report an average starting salary of $13.70 per hour, with a high salary of $14.45 per hour.
