Overview
Medical laboratory technicians perform general tests in all areas of the clinical laboratory: transfusion services (blood banking), chemistry, hematology, immunology and microbiology. An MLT performs tests that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Accuracy for a technician is absolutely essential; dedication and self-motivation also are critical attributes for this skilled science. Program graduates attain employment in a variety of settings such as hospitals, clinics, physicians’ offices, private and public health institutions, pharmaceutical laboratories and animal clinics. Graduates work in small and large facilities throughout Nebraska and neighboring states. Many continue their education and earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. The program is designed to be completed in 24 months. Students may also choose a three-year option in which to complete the program. Program graduates are eligible to take national certification examinations offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification. Upon completion, a graduate also may transfer the two years of credits to the University of Nebraska Medical Center Clinical Laboratory Science Program. SCC’s program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018, (773) 714-8880, www.naacls.org.
