GOLF NEWS - SCC Golf Team Earns Top-10 Finish at Nationals
(May 27, 2008) Southeast Community College's men's golf team shot a final-round 300 on Friday and finished in a tie for 10th place at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II National Tournament held in Goodyear, Ariz.
The team’s finish, one of the highest since a seventh-place performance in 2001, pleased Coach Bill Campbell.
"When we opened up like we did, fourth after the first day, I thought, 'could this be the year?' " Campbell said. "It was a great way to open. We were ahead of the three-time defending champs (Darton Community College of Georgia) by five or six strokes.
"Maybe the kids started looking back over their shoulder a bit. But in their defense, they really toughened up the course after the first day. They turned off the water, the wind blew and they rolled the greens, so there wasn't anything holding. The golf just got tougher."
Southeast opened tournament play with a 290, which was good for fourth place after the first round. Rounds of 317 and 318 pushed the Storm to ninth before the team rallied with a final-round 300.
John Sloan, who finished in a tie for 21st place with a four-round total of 300, 12 strokes over par, led SCC. Derek Nicholson just missed a top-50 finish as he ended in a tie for 51st place with a four-day total 308. Sloan just missed All-American honors.
"I don't want to sound like I'm complaining, but John was very unlucky the last two days," Campbell said. "If there was something that could go wrong, it happened to him. He just did not get a break those last two days."
The top 18 players make the All-America team.
Nate Koch (tie for 57th place), David Oldham (tie for 62nd place) and Brandon Schrock (96th place) rounded out the scoring for Southeast.
Campbell said at one point, Sloan was 4-under on his back nine on Friday, then had three consecutive bad breaks.
Nicholson had a steady tournament. His 81 on Friday included five birdies.
"It was exciting to be up there early," Campbell said. "I wish we could have hung around the leader board a little longer. But that's golf. The kids may have been trying too hard, but sometimes this game is cruel."
Campbell said he was pleased with the way his players conducted themselves during the week.
"They were absolute gentlemen," Campbell said. "They controlled themselves. They were great. It was very apparent why they were down there."
Tyler Junior College won the team title by three strokes over Darton. Marc Rice of Tyler won individual medalist honors with a 1-over-par 289.
Campbell noted that southern schools finished ahead of Southeast.
"I think it's more than coincidental," he said. "When we were battling snow drifts, they were outside hitting wedges."
