My endeavors with the TRIO program began when I was a freshman at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I joined the Student Support Services program there and I have been hooked on TRIO ever since. The TRIO program helped me in pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in social work and inspired me to purse a Masters degree as well.  In my spare time I enjoy running, biking, reading and spending time with my husband, Paul.

The following quote sums up my appreciation of TRIO: “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” – Booker T. Washington

Lou Mittan, MS. Ed., Assistant Director

I started with the TRIO/SSS program in December of 2001. I received my Bachelors degree in Vocational Education from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and my Masters degree in Education and Counseling from Wayne State. I have taught in several primary and secondary schools in rural Nebraska and enjoyed working summers for The Nebraska Honors Institute and John’s Hopkins University’s Gifted Education Program. I love my position with TRIO and appreciate all the unique and interesting students I’ve had the opportunity to meet while at SCC. I enjoy traveling, gardening and sewing.

My favorite quote is:  Life is a Journey. In the end, each of us will be judged by our standard of life, not by our standard of living; by our measure of giving, not by our measure of wealth; by our simple goodness, not by our seeming greatness.

I started working with the TRiO/Student Support Services in 2007 as a student intern on the Lincoln campus.  I have since spent time working on all three campuses and have enjoyed meeting students from so many varied backgrounds.  I graduated from Union College with my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and will be starting graduate school at University of Nebraska in Omaha.   In my free time I like to scrapbook, spend time with friends and family, cook, travel, volunteer, and play racquetball.

"Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man’s doing but my own.  I am the force… My choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny.”

I began working with TRIO in January of 2006 as a practicum student working on my Masters in Social Work at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Since then I have been on both the Lincoln and Milford campuses, and have most enjoyed meeting and getting to know the wide array of students TRIO serves. I have a Bachelors degree in Human Service Counseling from Wayne State College and will graduate with my Masters degree in August of 2008. In my spare time I most enjoy playing games and spending time with family and friends.

My favorite quote came from my high school track coach: If it was easy, anybody could do it!

Kandice Jurgens, TRIO Programs Office Assistant

I am the TRIO Programs Office Assistant based on the Beatrice Campus, but my duties don’t stop there. I assist staff on all three campuses with the various mailings you receive and general office work. I am very familiar with what a community college has to offer, I graduated with an Associates Degree from ACCC in Iola, KS and then transferred to Northwest Missouri State. My husband and I live on a farm southwest of Odell with our two children, who I am very proud of. My life revolves around my children, you will usually find me chauffeuring my kids to dance, gymnastics, wrestling and the many-many other activities they are involved in. As you get to know me you will find I am a huge Husker fan. In my spare time (which is very seldom) I enjoy playing volleyball, gardening, scrapbooking, coaching my kids, and attending Husker games. I hope all of you enjoy your experience with TRIO!
