Presidential Search Home | Presidential Search Ivan Gorne Ivan L. Gorne joined Bates Technical College in September 2006. In addition to creating a Strategic Enrollment Management program, Gorne supervises academic advising, the assessment center, financial aid, registration and records, multi-cultural services, disabled student services, outreach services, worker retraining, and facilities and operations. He oversees operating and capital budgets of $17,728,553 of an all-funds college budget of $48,398,095. Prior to Bates, Gorne served as vice president for student services at Highline Community College from 2001-2005. He directly supervised staff in enrollment services, diversity and student development services, student programs, counseling, international student programs, and athletics. The vice president for student services at HCC also was responsible for admissions and entry services, educational planning and advising, career and employment services, access services, women’s programs, WorkFirst, testing, the Highline Student Union, food service, and other initiatives and activities that affect students. Gorne came to HCC from Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore., where he served as vice president for student affairs for three years and taught a 400-level course titled “Criminal Evidence.” Prior to that he worked in various student programs, government relations and other student services functions, eventually serving as associate dean of students and assistant to the president for government relations at Edmonds Community College. Before starting his career in higher education as assistant director for career planning and placement at Central Washington University, he taught middle school, coached and directed the choir in the Steilacoom Historical School District in Steilacoom, Wash. Born in South Dakota, he moved to Oregon during elementary school and completed high school there. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science Education and a Master of Arts degree in Education (Counseling and Student Personnel Administration) from Pacific Lutheran University, along with a Juris Doctor degree from Seattle University. He is licensed to practice law in the state of Washington. Gorne has completed post-doctoral study at the Harvard University Institute for Education Management and the Washington Executive Leadership Academy. His professional interests include leadership, ethics, enrollment management, and how students make the most out of their college experience. He has written papers on these subjects and made presentations at regional and national conferences. He is or was previously a member of several professional organizations, including the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, the National Council for Student Development, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the Association of College Unions International, the American Association of Community Colleges, and the Washington State Bar Association. Gorne is married to Marsha Norberg Gorne and resides in Gig Harbor, Wash. Daughter, Anneliese, is an attorney and shareholder with Inslee Best in Bellevue, Wash., and son, Nicholas, is director of choral music at Bethel High School. Gorne’s interests include reading, choral music performance, fly fishing, and a variety of recreational sports and fitness activities.
