Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence honors SCC

Southeast Community College is among 150 community colleges nationwide, and the only one from Nebraska, to make the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence list.

Aspen recently released the list that includes colleges from 37 states. All have demonstrated strong outcomes in three areas of student success: rate of students' persistence, completion and transfer; consistent improvement in outcomes over time; and equity in outcomes for students of all racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Dr. Jack Huck, SCC president, said he was pleased to be among the top 15 percent (approximately) of 1,005 potential candidates in the U.S.

"In 2011 and 2012, Aspen listed Southeast Community College in the top tier of community colleges in the nation," Huck said. "This is another outstanding achievement for the College. We are very proud of the fact that we provide our students with the tools necessary to be successful."

Huck said that success is defined in numerous ways since students arrive at SCC with goals specific to their needs.

"Not every student who enrolls at SCC has a goal of obtaining a degree," he said. "Many take classes and transfer those credits to a four-year institution. Some students improve their skills and get hired before they graduate."

The Round 1 Eligibility Model was developed by the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems, in consultation with the Aspen Prize's Data and Metrics Advisory Panel. It also used publicly available data from the National Center for Education Statistics' Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and the U.S. Census Bureau. The model is based on institutional performance in three areas of student success stated above.

Ten finalists will be broadly publicized in fall 2014, and the winner will be announced in early 2015.
