Eleven Southeast Community College student-athletes have received Academic Student-Athlete Awards by the National Junior College Athletic Association.
Samuel Palensky, a baseball player from Papillion, leads the way with a 4.0 grade-point average. He earned the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.
Six student-athletes earned Superior Academic Achievement recognition. They are Jared Torell, Lincoln, Baseball, 3.95; Makayla McDaniel, Franklin, La., Women’s Basketball, 3.92; Haley Girmus, Friend, Volleyball, 3.89; Hannah Mitchell, Summerfield, Kan., Volleyball, 3.85; Jack Richter, Oak Harbor, Wash., Baseball, 3.85; and Tandon Dorn, Filley, Baseball, 3.8.
Four student-athletes earned Exemplary Academic Achievement recognition. They are Paige Smith, Overton, Volleyball, 3.73; Elizabeth Snider, Maywood, Volleyball, 3.71; Zachary Taylor, Omaha, Golf, 3.68; and Stephanie Stamp, Bradshaw, Softball, 3.63.
Pinnacle awards go to student-athletes whose GPA is a 4.0 on a 4.0 scale. Superior awards go to student-athletes whose GPAs are 3.80-3.99 on a 4.0 scale. Exemplary awards go to student-athletes whose GPAs are 3.60-3.79 on a 4.0 scale.
Two SCC teams earned spots on the Academic Team of the Year list. The men’s golf team finished 12thin the nation with a cumulative GPA of 3.23, while the volleyball team ranked 28th in the nation with a cumulative GPA of 3.38.
The NJCAA recognizes teams with GPAs above 3.0.
During the 2013-14 academic year, the NJCAA saw 58,446 student-athletes compete on 3,705 teams in 28 different sports. Of those competitors, 3.08 percent, or 1,799 student-athletes, were recognized with academic awards for their achievements in the classroom. Receiving the highest honors with a 4.0 GPA, 171 student-athletes received the NJCAA Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.
