English as a Second Language

  • The program consists of a series of classes to provide a strong foundation in fundamental grammar structures, sentence patterns and English vocabulary. All ESL classes include reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students who have not previously registered for the SCC ESL program or have been out of class for more than six months must make an appointment for the ESL Orientation.

    The ESL series of classes is not a full-time program. SCC does not have the authorization to issue a student visa document (Form I-20) for international students to study ESL. Call the Admissions Office at 437-2600 for more information on visa documents.

    Class options vary based on location and quarter. Classes that are offered include:

    • Beginning English
    • Intermediate English
    • Advanced English
    • ESL for Academic Success (college preparation)
    • Newcomer Refugee ESL class

    Newcomers Educational Center

    We offer non-credit intermediate-level ESL courses in the areas of

    • Dental Assisting
    • Food Service and Hospitality
    • Medical Laboratory Technician
    • Medication Aide Microcomputer Technology (Beginner and Intermediate)
    • Nursing Assistant

    These courses will offer opportunities for students to explore careers and college programs develop specialized technical vocabulary and become familiar with college faculty facilities, services and academic expectation. Not all courses are offered every quarter.
