Interpreter and Translator Training

  • SCC is the place for you to improve your Interpreter skills. SCC offers several courses focusing on skills training for interpreters. The prerequisites for joining the initial interpreter training class are completion of secondary education and placement into SCC ESL Level 8. Interpreter training courses include:

    The Role of the Interpreter and Translator - (noncredit: 4.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisites: Completion of secondary education (high school) AND successful completion of ESL for Academic Success III (ESLX-0700), or ESL placement test.)
    This practice-oriented course will immediately immerse the students in focused discussions, lectures, and problem-solving activities that highlight the everyday issues faced in interpreting. The goal of the course is to educate the students about ethical behavior: what it means to be a "professional" and how these key proficiencies play an integral role in being a skilled and competent interpreter. It will also lay the foundation for the following interpreter training courses. Required materials are available in the SCC Bookstore

    Interpreting in the Community and Law Enforcement
     - (noncredit: 4.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of The Role of the Interpreter and Translator, LLGK1500)
    This is a practice-oriented course which will immediately immerse the student in focused discussions, lectures, and problem-solving activities that highlight the everyday issues faced in Community and Law Enforcement Interpretation. The goal of the course is to assist the student in developing a strong knowledge base and working vocabulary regarding law enforcement agencies, and both public and private services available in Lincoln, Nebraska.

    Introduction To Court Interpreting -
     (noncredit: 4.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of The Role of the Interpreter, LLGK1500)
    Interpreters will focus on the knowledge, skills, professional behavior, and commitment to professional development in the field of interpreting in the judicial/court setting. The instructor for this course is a Federally-certified Judicial Interpreter. Required textbook is available in the SCC Bookstore.

    Introduction to Medical Interpreting -
     (noncredit: 4.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of The Role of the Interpreter, LLGK1500)
    Language interpreters will focus on the knowledge, skills, professional behavior, and commitment to professional development in the field of language interpreting in medical settings. Interpreters will define their medical interpreting skills, increase their knowledge of the healthcare industry in Lincoln, NE, and learn how to work in various medical settings. This interactive course will include focused discussions, lectures, and problem-solving activities that highlight the topic of Language Interpreting in Medical Settings. Required textbook is available in the SCC Bookstore.

    Intermediate Medical Interpreting -
     (noncredit: 2.5 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Introduction to Medical Interpreting, LLGK1510)
    This course will provide instruction on basic medical terms, procedures, and pharmacies.

    Interpreting in the Behavioral/Mental Health Setting
     - (noncredit: 3.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Medical Interpreting, LLGK1511)
    This course will provide instruction on basic medical terms, procedures, and pharmacies in the area of Behavioral/Mental Health.

    Interpreting in the Emergency Room Setting -
     (noncredit: 3.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Medical Interpreting, LLGK1511)
    This course will provide instruction on basic medical terms, procedures, and pharmacies in the area of Emergency Room medicine.

    Interpreting in the Obstetric/Gynecological Setting -
     (noncredit: 3.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Medical Interpreting, LLGK1511)
    This course will provide instruction on basic medical terms, procedures, and pharmacies in the area of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

    Interpreting in the Pediatric/Neonatal Setting
     - (noncredit: 3.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of Intermediate Medical Interpreting, LLGK1511)
    This course will provide instruction on basic medical terms, procedures, and pharmacies in the area of Pediatric/Neonatal medicine.

    Introduction to Translating
     - (noncredit: 4.0 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of The Role of the Interpreter, LLGK1500)
    This course will introduce participants to the profession of translating. Learn how translating differs from interpreting. Learn the skills necessary to become an effective, successful translator and how to continue professional development in the field of translation.

    Beginning Translating Strategies -
     (noncredit: 1.2 CEU's)
    (Prerequisite: Successful completion of The Role of the Interpreter, LLGK1500)
    This course will cover the fundamentals of translating. You will learn how translating differs from interpreting and how to continue building your professional development in the field of translating.
