Joel Wooton enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Storm men’s basketball team and assistant women’s coach. Wooton has 18 years of college coaching experience and has helped lead three different teams to the national tournament, two for the first time in the school’s history. He led the SCC men’s team to only the second national tournament appearance in school history in 2007-2008 and helped lead the women’s team to its first-ever appearance in 2011-2012. Wooton’s 2011-2012 Storm men’s team won the region championship and was ranked as high as No. 5 in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll. The Storm lost a heart-breaker in the district championship game or both men’s and women’s teams would have qualified for the national tournament. A proud moment in Coach Wooton’s career was when his 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 teams each earned the National Academic Team of the Year award. Wooton is serving a two-year term on the NJCAA National Basketball Coaches Association as vice president after serving two years as the National Division II Representative. Coach Wooton and his wife Vicki, SCC’s women’s basketball coach, have three daughters: Ashley 24, Lindsey 20, and Whitney 15.
