Ag students from Southeast Community
College took home three first-place awards in a recent national competition. A
celebratory pep rally was at the Beatrice Campus on Wednesday, May 2.
The Agriculture Business
& Management Technology students competed in the North American Colleges
and Teachers of Agriculture Judging Conference in Norfolk April 18-21. Students
placed first in Knowledge Quiz Bowl, Ag Business Team and Horticulture Contest,
as well as third place in Dairy Judging.
“This is a major
accomplishment for the SCC Ag program and the first time in the history of SCC
Ag for a first-place finish in the Knowledge Quiz Bowl,” said Kenni Woerner, Ag
Instructor.
Thirty-nine colleges competed
in six required areas: soils, crops, general livestock, dairy cattle, Ag
business, and knowledge bowl.
“It helps prepare our
students for their future jobs as they are utilizing skills they have acquired
while at SCC,” said Annie Erichsen, Ag Instructor. “NACTA is a national
organization that allows students to compete and interact with others from
across the country. They meet students from many different colleges and
agriculture backgrounds. It also gives them an opportunity to test their
knowledge skills against others.”
The winners received their
awards during the pep rally, and took part in a quiz bowl activity involving students
and instructors.
