Students and staff at
Southeast Community College’s Beatrice Campus came out in full force for a fall
food drive. Around 2,000 items were donated to the campus’s food pantry.
“October was national Hunger
Awareness Month, so we did a food drive in order to stock our food pantry,”
said Betsy Anderson, academic advisor at the Beatrice Campus. “We had different
groups of students and employees collect food and then build structures of the
collected food. Overall, 1,747 food items and 211 non-food items were donated.”
Beatrice, Lincoln and Milford
campuses all have food pantries for students who are in need. This is the first
time the Beatrice Campus combined the food drive with the food structure contest.
“It’s really heartwarming to
see the campus come together, gathering a lot of items for the food pantry and
taking part in friendly competition,” Anderson said. “It helps to build
community between students and employees.”
Winners of the contest were
based on creativity. First place: Ag program; second place: Practical Nursing students;
third place: Administration. Anderson said she hopes this becomes an annual
event on the Beatrice Campus.
