Dr. Jon Gruett.

Dr. Jon Gruett, who has decades of experience directing, conducting and performing in music and theatre, will direct Southeast Community College’s chorus, After the Storm, during the 2015-16 academic year.

Gruett, who has been working with SCC music students, also will teach private voice lessons at the College’s Education Square location in downtown Lincoln.

Dr. Ken Hoppmann, Humanities co-chair and music instructor at SCC, said Gruett’s experience will be a big asset to SCC and to the students.

“Voice lessons will be available in Lincoln,” Hoppmann said. “Dr. Gruett is an excellent instructor who is very excited to have the opportunity to be teaching voice lessons and conducting the chorus. There are many talented students in Lincoln who are interested in singing and making music part of their lives at SCC. He looks forward to helping them achieve their goals through excellence in music.”

Prior to teaching at SCC, Gruett was assistant professor of voice and music theatre at Michigan State University and the University of Redlands and associate professor of voice at Oklahoma Baptist University. He has also served as guest director of opera at Eastman School of Music.

His performing credits include appearances with the opera companies of Bremen, Germany; Edinburgh, Scotland; Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Cleveland, Boston, Seattle, and Milwaukee. He has also sung with the following orchestras: The Minnesota Orchestra, Chicago’s Grant Park Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the Lansing Symphony. He has conducted and stage-directed more than 40 operas and musicals at the professional, university and high school levels.

Gruett lived in Bremen, Germany, for six years, during which time he performed with the Hamburg production of “CATS” for four-and-a-half years and served as staff voice teacher for the German productions of “CATS,” “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Starlight Express.” His former students are singing with prestigious musical theater and opera companies throughout the United States and Europe.
