The Southeast Community College
men's golf team won its 11th consecutive National
Junior College Athletic Association Division II Region IX
tournament title Wednesday, qualifying the Storm for the national
tournament for an 11th straight season.
Leighton Thomas, Clayton Peterson
and Ronan Higgins finished 1-2-3 at the 54-hole two-day Region IX
Tournament played at York Country Club.
Thomas, a freshman from York, shot a
first-round 79 before blistering the YCC course for a 4-under-par
66 Tuesday afternoon. He finished the event with a 75 on Wednesday
for a 220 total, just one stroke better than teammate Clayton
Peterson. Peterson, a freshman from Lincoln (Southeast High School)
who won three tournaments earlier in the season, shot steady rounds
of 75-71-75 for a 221 total. Higgins, a freshman from Galway,
Ireland, carded a 231 with rounds of 75-77-79.
SCC will advance to the NJCAA
Division II National Tournament May 19-22 at Goose Pond Colony Golf
Club in Scottsboro, Ala.
Sophomore Chad Manes of Beatrice
finished ninth in the Region IX Tournament with a 254. He was
followed by SCC teammate Lane Gascoigne, a freshman from Callaway,
who finished 11th with a 260.
The Storm, which shot a three-round
total of 918, won the team title by a whopping 45 strokes.
Northeastern (Colorado) Junior College was second with a 963,
followed by Central Community College (1,057). Miles (Montana)
Community College only entered two players and did not have a team
Last season SCC finished eighth at
nationals. Manes was a part of that team and finished in
51st place at nationals as a freshman.
