The 20th edition
of Southeast Community College’s Illuminations
publication has won First Place for Literary Magazine in the small magazines
category from the Community College Humanities Association.
“I’m so
proud of this 20th anniversary edition and all of its contributors
and editorial team members,” said Kim Vonnahme,
Illuminations editor.
Illuminations began with an idea from a few English faculty members and
students who came up with a 57-page magazine published in black and white. It
has grown into a full-color, 200-page glossy publication that offers prizes to
six outstanding student contributors. Students, staff and faculty from all SCC
campuses are eligible to submit their work.
“There are many fine literary magazines out there, but Illuminations features
two factors that are unusual for a college-level publication,” said Vonnahme. “First,
we're inclusive, inviting submissions from anyone associated with the SCC
community. There aren't many activities that invite all campuses, all types of
students, and all faculty, staff, and administrative personnel to
participate.”
Secondly, she added that the publication
is free, and there are no ads to pay for it.
“We’ve been fortunate to have a
supportive administration that recognizes the value of an arts publication for
the college,” she added.
Vonnahme is stepping down as Illuminations editor. English instructor
Tammy Zimmer will take over as editor.
