Close to 150 people came out
for Southeast Community College’s Annual Health Fair at the Lincoln Campus on
May 25. A number of vendors educated students and staff about their health-related
services. Some of the booths included local gyms, chiropractors, mental health providers,
and weight-loss centers.
“It allows students and
employees to interact with local vendors and to see what’s going on out there
in the community,” said Brett Ducker, Fitness & Wellness Coordinator at
SCC. “It’s nice to get everyone involved and hear the positive feedback.”
The fair offered free health
screenings, giveaways and chances to win free gym memberships. The most popular
booth was one with four furry canines, trained to calm people with their
easy-going demeanor.
“The Healing Heart Therapy
dogs were for sure the most popular,” said Ducker. He said the therapy dogs
also visit SCC during final exam week and other events where relaxation is
needed.
The SCC Health Fair is a way
for students and staff to take a break from school and discover new ways to get
healthy, especially going into the summer season.
“A lot of people stop by and
ask me about the correct running form,” said Eric Heyl from the Lincoln Running
Company. “We try to keep it so you’re more efficient, not perfect, because a lot
of us run for therapy and escape from the world.”
Ducker said this is the
fourth time he’s organized the health fair, and it continues to grow.
