Break out of your cabin fever
next weekend with three opportunities to see a fun, free musical! Southeast
Community College’s Performing Arts department is putting on Maltby &
Shire’s “Closer Than Ever” at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 11 and 12,
and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 13. The productions will be at the Jack J. Huck
Continuing Education Center at 301 S. 68th St. Place in Lincoln.
“Closer Than Ever is a collection of songs and ensembles that sing
about life in New York City during the 1980s,” said Dr. Jon Gruett, SCC theater
and music instructor. “The musical score and lyrics are very similar to the
work of Stephen Sondheim. People who attend will be taken on a wonderful
journey about life, love and laughter.”
Topics range from unrequited adoration to aging to Muzak, all with resounding
sincerity and precisely-placed hilarity. Each song is a unique story told by a
new character, taking audiences not only into the songbook of Maltby and Shire,
but into the minds of the individuals facing these relatable challenges.
The two-act
production contains no dialogue and has been described as a “bookless book
musical.”
