SCC to host 3rd Annual Leadership and College Success Conference on April 1

Southeast Community College will host a conference for high school seniors designed to encourage students to pursue higher education.

“The organizers, faculty and staff at SCC hope to empower high school seniors and graduates to embrace college education and leadership opportunities,” said Dr. Amanda Baron, Spanish instructor and organizer of the event.

More than 50 students were nominated by high school teachers, counselors and coaches from area schools. The event is designed to provide mentoring and support for students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds.

“The purpose of the conference is to improve academic achievement of students in this demographic and to encourage the pursuit of higher education,” Baron said.

The day-long conference will help students with tutoring, mentoring, college areas of study, financial planning, and much more.

The keynote speaker is Christopher Phipps, a native of Harlem, New York, who holds degrees in psychology and higher education administration. He is the vice president of the non-profit organization, Men With Dreams, which helps inspire youth to pursue their dreams.

The conference is from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at SCC’s Lincoln Campus, 8800 O St. Registration will start in room V103. Lunch will be provided.
