The Southeast Community
College men’s golf team has qualified for the national tournament for the 14th
consecutive year.
The Storm will be competing
with more than 120 of the best National Junior College Athletic Association
Division II golfers at GlenLakes Golf Club on May 21-24 in Foley, Alabama.
The Storm beat Central Community College in the Region IX
Tournament May 3-4 at the York Country Club to qualify. SCC Coach Bill Campbell,
in his 32nd season at SCC, said his team earned its trip to
nationals.
“We’ve proven over the season that we’re the best in the region,”
he said.
The Storm will leave on
Friday, May 18 in order to make the first practice at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May
19. Playing for SCC are Noah Hofman of McCook; Braden Wheeler of Ontario,
Canada; Tyler Schafer of Omaha; Jordan Greenwood of Kimball; and Kean Kontor of
Lincoln.
Hofman and Wheeler are the
two sophomores hoping to make a big impression during the tournament.
“Braden Wheeler is really
playing solid,” Campbell said. “I’m really happy with the way he’s playing this
year. He’s a very steady golfer.”
Hofman will spend Thursday, May
17 at the U.S. Open Local Qualifier in Omaha before he heads to Nationals the
next day.
“That kid (Hofman) is playing
great,” Campbell said. “He’s in my top five of all time at SCC. He’s all golf
all the time.”
The 72-hole event is at GlenLake’s Vista Dunes course, a 6,938-yard,
par-72 course. It’s a Scottish links-style course featuring strategic mounding,
extensive bunkering and undulating fairways and greens.
