Here for you: Community From Day One

Southeast Community College serves communities in 15 counties in southeast Nebraska. SCC also creates communities on each of our campuses, where students can join clubs, compete in athletics, and find support systems among their peers and instructors.
Lexis Bruns-Morris found one of those communities in TRIO.
“They really try to make TRIO a community,” Bruns-Morris said. “Not just with your TRIO coach, but with other people in TRIO.”
Bruns-Morris is taking nursing courses at SCC, which she will use to transfer to Nebraska Methodist College for her bachelor’s degree. She has always had a passion for nursing, ever since she was young. She was diagnosed with Eosiniphilic esophagitis, and spent a lot of time around doctors, hospitals and nurses.
“I really admired the nurses who took the time to just be there,” Bruns-Morris said. “As I got older, I kept asking them why they got into nursing, and I found it interesting too.”
Her peers and mentors in TRIO have helped her pursue that passion. It was her TRIO coach that encouraged her to get her bachelor’s degree, and helped her research programs and what credits she already had that could transfer over.
All of this is thanks to the community that exists at SCC.
“It’s very community based. I like how it’s small and one-on-one,” she said. “I know my instructors personally, I have a good relationship with them. They don’t just know me as a student in their class, but they also know me as a person and it really means a lot to me.”
