Illuminations Receives Regional and National Recognition

Illuminations Volume 27 received two Best Magazine awards in the Community College Humanities Association’s Literary Magazine Competition in October. The magazine won first place in the Best Magazine category in the central region, and won second place in the category at the national competition.

The CCHA Literary Magazine Competition recognizes outstanding literary magazines and student writing from community colleges across the country each year.

Four SCC students also received individual recognitions in the central region: Laila al-Mugotir won first place in Best Photography for "Seahorse;" Nathan Miller won second place for his short story "Beyond the Software;" Daniel Silva placed third in Best Creative Nonfiction with "Chasing Freedom;" and Anthony Delaney's poem "Tomorrow Calf" received third place in Best Poems.

"These awards are a tremendous honor for our student contributors and everyone who helped produce the volume," Wendy Weitzel, who oversees the publication and teaches English at SCC. "We’re especially proud that the magazine itself was recognized alongside the individual work of our students. These honors reflect the creativity and talent of all the students whose writing and artwork appeared in Volume 27, as well as the care that went into editing and designing the magazine."
