Nursing Assistant
Nursing Assistants provide care for patients in long-term care facilities, hospitals, home health care, hospice or mental health facilities. Nursing assistants' duties vary, from providing help with activities of daily living for the patients such as ambulating, feeding, to bathing, toileting, dressing etc. under the supervision of a Registered nurse or Licensed Practical nurse. High school completion or GED® is not required. Please note: This course does not qualify for Financial Aid.
One of the prerequisites for any nursing program in Nebraska and many other states is that you must be on the Nurse Aide Registry. To do that you must take an approved course and pass state exams. Successful completion of this course will put you on the registry.
Southeast Community College’s Nursing Assistant Course is approved by the Nebraska Department of Health.

Q: What do I do if a third party is paying for me to take the class?
A: A letter of authorization on company letterhead must accompany your registration
form. This letter must include the individual student’s full name and Social Security
number. Please state the amount of money agreed to pay for tuition, fees and book
(if applicable).
Q: What does “hybrid” mean?
A: Hybrid is a blend of online course work and in-person labs.
Q: Do I need to have my high school diploma or GED® in order to take the Nursing Assistant
classes?
A: No. You must be at least 16 years of age by the start date of the class you plan
to enroll.
Q: What is the difference between a Nursing Assistant and a CNA?
A: Even though CNA is a commonly used term to refer to Nursing Assistants, the state
of Nebraska does not “certify” Nursing Assistants. Your title is “Approved Nursing
Assistant.” SCC will report to the state of Nebraska all of the names of students
who have successfully completed the College’s Nursing Assistant course.
Q: How do I check my status on the Nebraska Registry?
A: Navigate to the Nebraska State Registry website page or call 402-471-4322.
Q: How do I reactivate my status on the Registry if it is lapsed?
A: See Nebraska Testing Entities List
Q: How long will my Nursing Assistant status remain active on the Nebraska Registry?
A: Registry status lapses if you have not worked as a Nursing Assistant during the
past two years. You can retest at an approved testing site for a minimal fee.
All nurse aides coming from another state must complete a minimum one hour of Nebraska Abuse/Neglect/Misappropriation Training, even if similar training was completed as part of another state's requirements. SCC offers this 1-hour course through our Continuing Education Division.
